Library Digitization & Preservation Assistant

Essential functions

The Niels Bohr Library & Archives, a special collection in the history of modern physics, astronomy, and allied sciences, at the American Institute of Physics, is seeking a part-time Library Digitization & Preservation assistant. The assistant will work with the Photo Librarian to maintain and preserve the visual archives database and with the Librarian to perform book repairs and preservation work. Duties include organizing, arranging and cataloging collections, scanning images, repairing books, and performing other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrable computer skill (MS Access, Outlook, Word and Excel) and experience with using photo editing software.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and maintaining quality while performing tasks are required, along with the ability to work well with others.
  • Previous experience working in a library/archive environment is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift 40-pound boxes of archival/library materials.
  • We are conveniently located near the Washington Metro green line and University of Maryland.
  • 22.5 hours per week/flexible work schedule. 
  • Knowledge of physics/allied sciences is not required.
