Dr. Neal D. Shinn is the Co-Director for the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and the Senior Manager of the Integrated Nanotechnologies Group at Sandia National Laboratories. CINT is National User Facility jointly operated by Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories for the U. S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
Dr. Shinn received the B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics with High Distinction from the Pennsylvania State University in 1978 and the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. Thereafter, he was a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the laboratories of Dr. Theodore E. Madey. Dr. Shinn’s post-doctoral research involved the elucidation of novel surface reaction intermediates using vibrational and electronic spectroscopies in conjunction with thermal and stimulated desorption techniques.
In 1985, he joined Sandia National Laboratories as a Senior Member of the Technical Staff in the Surface and Interface Science Department, later becoming the Department Manager. During this time, he developed several collaborative synchrotron beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source and used them for basic research and Sandia mission programs. In 2002, he joined the SNL/LANL development team to launch CINT. In 2006 he assumed responsibility for the CINT construction project, which was honored with the U. S. Department of Energy Award of Achievement in project management in 2008. He became the CINT Co-Director in 2011.
Dr. Shinn also served as the interim manager for Sandia’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program. His research interests involve the physics and chemistry at solid surfaces. He has published over 85 scientific papers, serves on DOE and academic advisory boards, was the 2007 President of the AVS Science & Technology society, and currently serves on the Governing Board of the American Institute of Physics.
