The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a Senior Science Writer who will serve as a primary writer, a key organizer and a central team member in the News and Media Services Division (NMS) within the Physics Resources Center (PRC). He/she will write news releases, produce multimedia and other news products, and lead certain projects centered around media outreach for several scientific meetings and peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will participate both as a collaborator and a team leader, and will write in plain language with precision and flair about research news in the physical sciences and related fields for the media and the public.
A bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences with demonstrated writing ability -or- demonstrated knowledge of the physical sciences and a degree in English, journalism, communications or a related field are required -- a graduate writing degree or advanced science degree preferred. At least 4-7 years of experience in science writing, newsroom journalism, and/or PR is desired. He/she will have strong writing skills and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. High-level skills in one or more of the following areas is desired: image creation (infographs), video production, video editing, podcasts, and development of online interactive graphics. A deep appreciation of social media and its use in building communities is also desired. A broad understanding of traditional media in its various forms and the ability to foster and maintain friendly relationships with reporters and newsrooms, as well as a professional demeanor and ability to give presentations and reports are required. He/she must be able to lead a team and to travel overnight on business as necessary.
