Darlene Walters

Darlene WaltersDarlene Walters was Senior Vice President, Publishing at the American Institute of Physics until her retirement in December 2008. In that role, she was responsible for all publishing operations at AIP’s Publishing Center, including the publication program of the AIP and the publishing services provided by AIP to its Member Societies and society publishing customers. Her operation spanned all areas of publishing including production and composition of more than 350,000 pages/year, online hosting and fulfillment services for over 170 journals, marketing, web-based peer review, product and services sales, and supporting technology. With a Publishing program and Publishing Services operation approximating $63M in total revenue, Darlene was also responsible for the publishing of AIP’s premier journals in physics and related fields.

During her 29-year tenure, Darlene transitioned AIP into an era of online publishing with a strong international presence. In the early years of her career at AIP, Darlene was responsible for the production of the journals of the American Physical Society. Later she was instrumental in international negotiations with AIP’s Russian translation program and played an important strategic role.

She holds a bachelors degree from St. Francis University in Pennsylvania and an MBA from Adelphi University in New York. Darlene is a member of the Association of American Publishers, the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives.
