Event description:
This two week long school will survey the state-of-the-art in theory and experiment aimed at building a fundamental understanding of glassy behavior. The goal is to prepare students and junior researchers to undertake cutting edge research on glass formers and glasses. Lectures will cover topics ranging from the onset of slow relaxation at temperatures above the glass transition to the origin of mechanical response and material failure in amorphous solids. Tutorial sessions will provide opportunities for informal interaction and instruction. Main topical areas include: Phenomenology of glassy systems and glass forming liquids; Structure, dynamics and response in liquids; Mode coupling theory; Kinetically constrained models; Dynamical heterogeneity; Energy landscape approaches; Random first order transition theory; Density functional theory; Free volume theories; Structural changes in glasses; Spin glasses; Polymer glasses; Metallic glasses, Chalcogenides; Colloidal glasses; Jamming and granular materials; Rigidity percolation; Aging in glass systems; Glass formability and suppression of nucleation; Rheology near the glass transition; Elasticity and plasticity; Failure modes in glasses. Interested students and researchers should apply online through the school website, on or before September 20, 2009. Further details will be posted on the school web page http://www.icts.res.in/program/glass2010
