Geophysicists Find Moving Volcano Hotspots, Shaking Long-Held Assumptions

November 1, 2003

Geophysicists have long pointed to the Emperor-Hawaiian seamount as evidence that volcanic plumes -- fountains of melted rock that create volcanoes -- tend to stay put as tectonic plates move. New rock samples from the ocean floor demonstrate instead that the opposite was true -- the plume moved, while the plate did not. The finding may have implications for seismology and climate science.
