Discoveries & Breakthroughs Inside Mathematics

How is math used to create special effects in movies? How does math used in origami help design the best way to fold an airbag for optimum deployment and compute the optimum configuration of space telescope lenses? How can math help allocate resources to best benefit all parties? How could math prevent icicles from forming on power lines? The American Mathematical Society partners with Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science to bring the latest discoveries and applications of mathematics to viewers of local TV news programs all over the country--and here on the DBIS website.

Founded in 1888, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) has over 30,000 members worldwide, and fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday life. If you are interested in suggesting a mathematics story idea or an expert in the mathematical sciences for Discoveries & Breakthroughs Inside Science, or if you wish to learn more about the AMS, please email paoffice@ams.org.
