Mechanical Engineers Test the Acoustics of Road Noise
To reduce noise exposure for people who live and work near highways, mechanical engineers are looking for construction materials that can make pavements quieter. Researchers are testing different theories for how road noise is produced by rolling tires over different kinds of pavement in the lab. They have found that the quietest materials are porous, flexible materials such as concrete or asphalt with minor surface texturing.
