Stop the Stuttering

New Device Works by Altering, Delaying Auditory Feedback

July 1, 2003

Speech language pathologists have known for years that people who stutter tend to speak better when talking in unison with another person. Audiologists have now developed a device to counter stutter through altered auditory feedback. Called Speech Easy, the device is worn in the ear and it plays back a person's speech in a different pitch and after a slight delay. Speech Easy helps in more than 80 percent of the cases, yet researchers are still unsure why it works.
