Accelerating Breast Cancer Treatment

Radiation Oncologists Cut Down Time to 5 Days

July 1, 2003

Some breast cancer patients can now receive radiation treatment in just five days, down from a typical six weeks, in what radiation oncologists call accelerated partial breast irradiation. In one variant of the technique, called brachytherapy, several catheters are placed into the lumpectomy cavity where some cancer cells might remain. Radiation goes through the tubes directly to that site. The focused treatment means less damage to healthy tissue and fewer side effects.
