Coils Foil Aneurysms

Neuroradiologists Treat Smaller Brain Aneurysms With Coils

August 1, 2003

A slinky-like platinum coil can prevent small brain aneurysms -- abnormal bulges in an artery's wall -- from rupturing. Doctors run a tiny catheter up the patient's thigh into the brain. Then, the tiny coil snakes through the catheter into the aneurysm and helps reduce the pressure inside. A recent large-scale study has shown that even small aneurysms require treatment.
