Diagnosing Disaster

Microbiologists Are Using Airplane Sensors to Identify Hazardous Materials

December 1, 2003

Microbiologists at Los Alamos National Laboratory are now using the Airborne Spectral Photometric Collection Technology (ASPECT) to gather information from overhead. APECT consists of two infrared sensors and a Global Positioning System (GPS). The sensor help identify the material and the GPS technology maps the extent of the material. This information is essential for emergency crews responding to the scene.
