E Coli Sensors -- Aircheck

Detecting Bacteria With Electromechanical Cantilevers

January 1, 2007

Chemical engineers have developed a sensor that can almost instantly detect the presence of E. coli. The sensor is a millimeter-sized cantilever coated with antibodies that bind to the membranes of E. coli. Once the cantilever picks up a bacterium, its characteristic frequency of vibration can be detected electronically.
