How to Retrieve EPAPS Files
All EPAPS deposits can be accessed by users free of charge. Links to EPAPS from
the online journal article can be found in the list of references (abstract
view). Users can also follow the methods described below.
Via a WWW Browser
- From the EPAPS home page, follow the link "Retrieve Files" -- (you will be
entering the parent EPAPS FTP directory).
- Follow the link specific to the journal for which you are seeking to download
supplementary material. (You will be accessing a subdirectory devoted to the
journal that contains further subdirectories devoted to specific EPAPS deposits
for articles published in that journal.)
- Follow the link specific to the EPAPS deposit code referenced in the article;
the format is E-[six-letter journal CODEN]-[journal volume]-[file identifier],
i.e., E-JCPSA6-110-527901.
- Click on the files you want, making sure that your browser is configured
to recognize certain file extensions, handle downloads, etc. (Retrieve files
now.)
Via Command-Line FTP
- FTP to netserver.aip.org, i.e., type "ftp netserver.aip.org" followed by a
carriage return (CR) (as with all commands) at the command line or enter netserver.aip.org
as the FTP server in your FTP software.
- Login: anonymous
Password: your e-mail address
- Change directory to "epaps" by typing "cd epaps" at the command line or
otherwise issuing the "cd" command.
- Type (or issue the appropriate command) "dir" at the command line to receive
the list of subdirectories under the parent "epaps." (These will be
subdirectories arranged by participating journal abbreviation; see the
"Guide to the EPAPS FTP Directory Structure"
for complete details.)
- Change directory as needed by typing "cd [directory name]", i.e., cd journ_chem_phys
for the Journal of Chemical Physics -- type "dir" to view subdirectories
keyed to the EPAPS FTP file identifiers cited in the journal articles for
which supplementary information is available, e.g., E-JCPSA6-110-527901.
- Type "bin" to set the server for binary transfers; type "asc" for ASCII
or text-only transfers. (When in doubt, refer to the "Guide
to File Formats and Extensions" or type "bin.")
- Type (or issue the appropriate command) "dir" at the command line to receive
the list of files in the EPAPS deposit. Look for a "readme" file that details
the contents.
- Type "get" to retrieve individual files, or "mget *" to perform multiple
"gets" in interactive mode (answering "y" to files you want or "n" to those
you don't, followed by a CR to initiate the transfer).
- Type "bye" to terminate the connection to the server.
