“Fusion energy is the sort of high-risk, high-reward research that will benefit future generations if we are bold enough to pursue it,” said House Science, Space and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) at a recent hearing on the ITER fusion program.  Contrasting with the tenor of reports about the governance and construction management of the high profile fusion science project, the ninety minute hearing focusing on ITER was upbeat with strong support voiced by both Republicans and Democrats.

Last Thursday the Senate Appropriations Committee passed H.R. 4870, the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill for FY 2015. The committee report accompanying this bill provides the appropriators’ budget and policy recommendations for the three science and technology programs.

On Monday, the House of Representatives passed three bi-partisan bills relevant to the scientific community.  A fourth, the National Institute of Standards and Technology Policy Reauthorization Act was pulled from consideration but is expected to be voted on shortly by the House.
