The House and Senate have been working on their versions of the National
Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. Last Thursday, the House
passed H.R. 4200; the Senate is still working on S. 2400 . The Defense
Authorization bill serves as guidance for the FY 2005 Defense Appropriations
bill, which provides the actual funding.
The below figures are the recommended levels of FY 2005 funding for
the 6.1 Basic Research, 6.2 Applied Research, and 6.3 Advanced Technology
programs as compared to current funding. See FYI #66 for the general
report language pertaining to S&T programs.
AGGREGATE 6.1 (basic research) funding: House down 2.4%; Senate
up 0.5%
AGGREGATE 6.2 (applied research) funding: House down 5.7%; Senate
down 8.7%
AGGREGATE 6.3 (advanced technology development) funding: House
down 11.9%; Senate down 11.2%
TOTAL AGGREGATE 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3 funding: House down 8.5%; Senate
down 9.0%
ARMY 6.1 funding: House down 13.1%; Senate down 11.6%
ARMY 6.2 funding: House down 17.4%; Senate down 27.4%
