This prize was established in 1975 by Maxwell Technologies, Inc., and is named in honor of British physicist James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879). It is currently sponsored by General Atomics and is worth $10,000. It is given by the American Physical Society to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of plasma physics.
