Masters in geology (Cornell University) and Ph.D. in geochemistry (University of Michigan, 1960); between graduate degrees he worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, the Atomic Energy Commission, and held a position in Australia; after completing his Ph.D., did laboratory research for Exxon; taught geochemistry at the University of Tennessee while working as a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; appointment with the National Science Foundation; worked as program manager at Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) before being promoted to director of Environmental Assessment department; while working at EPRI Perhac became interested in studying climate change.
