This interview is part of a small program to document the recent history of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). These interviews were used as background studies to help authors of chapters of the centennial history volume of the Society research and organize documentary materials. The volume to be published in 1999.

Professional experience includes: resident astronomer, Lowell Observatory (1963-1975); adjunct professor, Ohio State University (1970-1975); astronomy division program director, National Science Foundation (1973-1979); executive officer, American Astronomical Society (1979-1995); member, Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Science Working Group, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (1982-1990); chair, National Academy of Science, Astronomy and Astrophysics Survey Committee (1989-1991).
