Hans Suess in 1972. Suess worked in a variety of fields from nuclear physics to geochemistry. During World War II he assisted the German attempt to build an atomic bomb; after the war he had key insights into why different elements are more or less abundant in the solar system; moving to the United States, he did important work using the new radiocarbon dating method.
