Historical Note

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) publishes scientific journals reporting original research in all the principal areas of physics and allied sciences including translation journals and journals on behalf of its Member Societies. The Publications Division handles this principal responsibility of the AIP.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The records of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Publishing Division document the production and publication of AIP and Member Society monographs and journals, and include correspondence, meeting material, reports and legal documents. Series I, Correspondence, is comprised mainly of the chronological correspondence files of Bob Marks and Paul Parisi, among others. The collection contains many publishing agreements between AIP and other institutions, as well as the negotiations and discussions leading up to a signed contract. Also featured in the collection are reports and research on page charges and subscription and use statistics for AIP journals.

Organization and Arrangement of Collection

This collection is organized into six series:

• Series I: Correspondence
• Series II: Publishing committees
• Series III: Russian translation
• Series IV: Member Society publishing
• Series V: Institute of Physics (IOP) publishing
• Series VI: Miscellaneous files

Each series is arranged chronologically, with the exception of Series IV which is arranged alphabetically by Member Society name.
