Gaining access to the Niels Bohr Library & Archives

The documents in the Library & Archives have been given by their owners with the understanding that general archival practices will be followed in handling them. Use of all unpublished collections except the Archives for the History of Quantum Physics requires an approved Access for Application (click here for access form). Moreover, some of the documents have had special limitations placed on their availability for examination and/or publication. The American Institute of Physics is consequently under an obligation to the original owner to preserve the documents in a proper manner, in addition to its scholarly obligation to make the material available to qualified researchers.

Accordingly, certain rules for the administration of the Library have been set up with a three-fold purpose:

  • to safeguard the trust of the donor
  • to make the documents readily available to qualified scholars within the limitations placed by the donors
  • to create conditions that will further the growth and the use of the Library.

The material in the Library is available for study and research by scholars whose applicationfor access have been approved. The Library is normally open between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Certain materials can be obtained through the mail on loan (microfilms of archival materials, photocopies of interview transcripts, etc.).
