Searchable Database of Photos Now Available on the Web

In May the Niels Bohr Library introduced a new World Wide Web site for its Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, located at http://photos.aip.org/. Visitors can search a database containing digital scans of our most popular photographs. Currently there are over 1000 photographs representing over 300 physicists in the database, and new photos are being added every week. The online collection can be searched most readily by personal name. One can either type a name or names to be searched, or view a list of all the names in the database and click on a name to find the photos. It is possible to construct a search requiring that two or more individuals be present in a photo. Also, searches can be limited by type of photo, such as formal portrait, and terms in the photograph description, such as "blackboard."

Researchers can fill an online "shopping cart" of photographs. Copies of the photos can be ordered over a secure Internet connection using a credit card or by printing out and sending us an order form. We encourage you to visit the site and try it out. It is still new and we would appreciate any comments or suggestions for improvements.
