Brazil, a hotbed for physics

IPF Brazil

In anticipation of the upcoming Industrial Physics Forum (IPF) in Campinas, Brazil, the AIP Industrial Outreach team has written an article for Physics Today’s Enterprise column providing insight into industrial physics in Brazil. In the article, you will learn that as of 2012, Brazil has the seventh largest economy in the world, enabling the Brazilian government to allot funds to establish Brazil as a hotspot for leading physics research. By 2020, Brazil will host the world’s most powerful synchrotron radiation light source and the first operational neutron beamline in Latin America, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to putting Brazil on the map as a leader of physics research, these projects are bridging a gap between researchers and industrial scientists that has stifled scientific progress for decades. Read more here. This IPF, themed “Capacity Building for Industrial Physics in Developing and Emerging Economies,” will focus on technical and policy topics that are closely related to scientifically driven economic development in Latin America. For more information, see the conference program. A conference summary will be included in a future issue of AIP Matters.
