Extended Text Version of PACS 2003 This version of PACS® is offered to the users who would like each PACS code as a stand-alone code bereft of the hierarchical structure within which the codes are listed in the standard version of PACS.
The text of each PACS code is extended to include the hierarchy. For example:
92.10.Vz - Underwater sound
01.50.Lc - Laboratory computer use
73.50.Td - Noise processes and phenomena
05.40.Ca - Noisefrom the standard hierarchical version of PACS are given the extended text versions as follows:
92.10.Vz - Underwater sound in oceans
01.50.Lc - Laboratory computer use for education
73.50.Td - Noise processes and phenomena in thin film electronic transport
05.40..Ca - Noise (statistical physics)The text of PACS codes is not modified whenever the content is self-explanatory. One of the possible uses of the extended text is to include it with PACS codes as they appear under abstracts of some journal articles. Currently the PACS codes are listed under article abstracts without any text. Additionally, this version will assist authors not familiar with PACS to select the appropriate PACS codes if required for the submission of their articles for publication. Another possible use is to facilitate searches in AIP's SPIN database.
Special thanks are due to The Institution of Electrical Engineers, owners of the INSPEC database, who cooperated with AIP in coming up with this version of PACS. AIP also gratefully acknowledges the foresight of the Subcommittee on Classification and Information Retrieval which saw the many possible uses of this version of PACS and directed AIP in its posting on the web. As always, AIP welcomes any feedback you may wish to provide to improve this version. Please address your comments to pacs@aip.org. or use the "Comments/Suggestions" feedback link at the PACS website.
