How Atoms Release Their Stress

A research team led by the University of Frankfurt has
demonstrated that atoms can hand over excess energy to a neighbor. In
the process, called "Interatomic Coulombic Decay," energy
from one atom can eject one of the electrons (green balls) in the neighboring
atom.
