STM pictures of ice being formed at T=140 K. (1) When the mean thickness is only 1 nm, the ice forms in islands. (2) When the mean thickness is 4 nm, the islands form into a complete covering. (3) When an upward growing plate meets with a downward growing plate, they pivot around each other.
