Strongly-bound Ultracold Molecules

At the University of Innsbruck rubidium atoms are held in an optical lattice-a trap created from criss-crossing laser beams which holds atoms in place much as eggs are kept in a special carton. Loosely bound molecules (left) of containing two Rb atoms can be made by magnetic forces in traps at nk temperatures. When an extra radio wave field is applied the molecules become more tightly bound (right).
