Muons whose spins have been oriented beforehand are sent into superconductors. Inside the material the muons' spins will be influenced by local magnetic fields. When the muon decays into several daughter particles, including a positron, the positron will emerge in the direction of the original muon, thereby providing information about the magnetic field there.
