Supernova 1987A

Hubble Image of Supernova 1987A

Hubble Telescope Image of Supernova 1987A, a spectacular explosion of a star 170,000 light years away. As its name implies, SN1987A was first detected in 1987 but many pictures have been taken since then, including many by the upgraded Hubble Telescope, which produced the image above. The image clearly shows rings of gas surrounding the central explosion. SN1987A produced copious amounts of the elusive particles known as neutrinos which were detected on Earth.
