AIP expands Author Select®, its open-access initiative to all AIP journalsFor immediate release MELVILLE, NEW YORK, April 3, 2006 —The American Institute of Physics announced that it is expanding its open-access publishing option, Author Select, to authors contributing to all AIP journals. Author Select was introduced in January 2005 for authors in three AIP journals: Chaos, Journal of Mathematical Physics, and Review of Scientific Instruments. The option is now available to authors contributing to Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics, The Journal of Chemical Physics, Physics of Fluids, and Physics of Plasmas. In addition, effective January 1, 2006, the fee for Author Select has been reduced from $2000 to $1500 for the three original journals in the program. The same applies for Physics of Fluids, which, like the other three Author Select journals, has no page charges. A fee of $1,800 applies to the other four AIP journals, with the request for payment of regular page charges waived if the Author Select fee is paid. By supporting both publication and archiving costs through this fee, authors can provide free online access to their published articles, in perpetuity, to any online user. While the AIP Author Select program will have no effect on subscription rates for 2006, AIP plans to reduce future online subscription prices proportionately to the percent of open-access articles published. "The goals of this expanded initiative and the reduced fees are, first, to support any author who wishes to publish in AIP's high-impact journals and, second, to see whether prepublication article payments produce enough revenue to allow us to hold down, reduce, or, ideally, eliminate library subscription prices," said Marc H. Brodsky, AIP Executive Director and CEO. Author Select articles will be highlighted by an icon in the table of contents of the online issues to indicate the articles' "toll-free" availability online. During the peer-review process, editors and referees are not aware of whether an author has selected the open-access option. The editors and their reliance on peer review are the only things that determine acceptability for publication.
