AIP publishes 500th Conference ProceedingsFebruary 07, 2000, Melville, NY The American Institute of Physics is proud to announce publication of the 500th volume in its Conference Proceedings series. Proceedings record the latest research results presented at scientific meetings worldwide. This prestigious series continues to be a valuable forum for researchers wishing to disseminate their findings to colleagues worldwide, said Darlene Walters, AIPs Vice President for Publishing. In addition, the rapid production cycle for proceedings volumes gives students and researchers fast access to new discoveries across a whole range of scientific disciplines. The 500th volume, The Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions: XXI International Conference, edited by Yukikazu Itikawa et al., presents papers from a July 1999 meeting in Sendai, Japan. It represents a significant milestone for the AIPs publishing program and comes almost exactly 30 years after the release of its first Proceedings volume in 1970. The research we publish is drawn from meetings held by the worlds leading professional and scientific societies, said Charles Doering, Manager of AIP's Conference Proceedings Program. Proceedings volumes preserve the continuity thats lost when conference papers appear in various journals. Without these works, it would be difficult to find such timely and comprehensive treatments of individual fields. For 30 years now, AIP has published Conference Proceedings volumes in the physical sciences from conferences held all over the world. It wasnt until the early 1980s, however, that the program released more than ten volumes in a single year. Today, AIP publishes approximately 45 conference proceedings per year and offers a variety of standing-order plans. The American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. AIP publishes Physics Today and is a leader in online journal publishing. Media Contact:
