AIP Joins CrossRef Search Pilot with New Gateway on its Scitation PlatformMELVILLE, NEW YORK, 23 March 2005 The American Institute of Physics (AIP) today announced its participation in the CrossRef Search Pilot. The project, currently encompassing the full text articles from more than 40 leading journal publishers, allows users of AIP journals to freely search the content of more than 3,000 scientific journals. Starting today, when AIP journal users wish to execute a search, they will have a new option to search “Multi-publisher Full Text (CrossRef Search).” Through a special, reciprocal arrangement between Google and CrossRef, the CrossRef Search Pilot launches a typical Google search, but filters the result set to include only the scholarly research content from participating publishers, with the intent of reducing the noise produced by general web searches. Google has indexed the full text of scholarly journal articles on AIP and other publishers' websites through a CrossRef gateway. Users may submit searches from a CrossRef Search Pilot box on each AIP journal site, and on boxes found on participating publishers' sites. Results are returned from Google, using the Google search and ranking algorithms, and using the article's DOI whenever possible to link from the search results to the published article. CrossRef Search Pilot will initially allow all AIP journal users to search across more than four million articles. In addition to AIP’s 11 journals, CrossRef Search Pilot includes journals of two other publishers which are hosted on AIP’s Scitation online platform, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Physical Society. APS has participated in the pilot program since its inception. “AIP is delighted to add full text cross-publisher searching to the services we provide to our users,” said Tim Ingoldsby, AIP Director of Business Development. “Giving users access to the authoritative scholarly content represented by the CrossRef participating publishers via the most popular web search engine interface is a perfect combination.
