AIP Partners with DeepDyve on Article Rental Pilot Program

Scientific publisher embraces innovative business model

Melville, NY, March 23, 2010 — The American Institute of Physics (AIP) (www.aip.org) announced today the launch of a pilot program that allows individuals to "rent" single articles for a 24-hour period for just $0.99. The service, created by DeepDyve, allows users to read, but not download or print, the full text of an article. Called by some "Netflix for researchers," the service gives corporations and institutions with more specialized collections affordable access to seminal AIP journal content. AIP will be offering their new article rental service on an experimental basis until the end of September, 2010.

"We're constantly looking for new business models and new distribution channels that will allow us to get our content into the hands of a wider and more diverse audience," said Terry Hulbert, AIP's Director, Business Development. "DeepDyve's service is an intriguing and new way for a potentially new market to see our journals content. There has been much talk of whether this business model might change the landscape of STM article purchasing. This pilot project is an experiment while we gather data to form the basis for our long-term decision."

The new AIP service offers users a broad range of helpful features, including persistent searches, e-mail and RSS alerts, and the ability to bookmark articles. DeepDyve's KeyPhraseTM search technology-where returned results are based on the relevance of the full text, not popularity-delivers additional value for the reader.

"As one of the premier scholarly publishers, AIP will be a highly valued source of authoritative content to DeepDyve's growing base of subscribers," said DeepDyve CEO William Park. "We are very excited to partner with AIP to serve its large audience of non-institutional end users who traditionally did not have easy or affordable access to such important sources of scholarly information."
