AIP to Publish Innovative Online Journal Geochemical Transactions

For immediate release

London, UK, December 1, 2003 - The American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Division of Geochemistry announced today that AIP will become the publisher of record for Geochemical Transactions. The electronic rapid-publication journal publishes research in all areas of chemistry relating to materials and processes occurring in the Earth's aquasphere and geosphere.

Geochemical Transactions was launched in the spring of 2000 as a publishing partnership between the ACS Division of Geochemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The publication has also received support from the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), a research university and library sponsored organization that promotes increased competition in scholarly publishing.

Darlene Walters, AIPs Vice President for Publishing said, This agreement marks the first time AIP has undertaken this kind of comprehensive publishing arrangement with a scholarly society. Publishing the innovative Geochemical Transactions draws on our strengths and shows our willingness to tailor arrangements that meet the needs of our publishing partners. Geochemical Transactions embraces very high standards and it has already earned a reputation of respect and authority, as shown by its inclusion in ISIs Web of Science. The journal will join a robust list of high quality publications from AIP and its Member and Affiliated Societies.

AIPs prestige and experience is a good fit for Geochemical Transactions, commented William Landing, Chair of the ACS Division of Geochemistry. We are particularly pleased to collaborate with a not-for-profit publisher that understands our desire to make this research available as widely as possible. We also look forward to the many benefits offered by AIPs Scitation® online hosting platform. The platform will provide functionality for both the text of the articles and the electronic enhancements, such as data sets and animations, that make this publication unique, he added.

The agreement is effective January 1, 2004. AIP will honor 2004 subscriptions and will work with RSC to transfer all subscription records. ACS Division of Geochemistry members will continue to receive discounted subscription rates. The journal will be fully operational on the Scitation system, including Peer X-Press submissions and online publishing, in the first quarter of 2004.

The American Institute of Physics (www.aip.org) is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. AIP is the publisher or co-publisher of 11 journals, three magazines and the AIP Conference Proceedings Series, many of which have the highest impact factors in their category. AIPs online publishing platform, ScitationSM,currently hosts 560,000 articles from 114 scholarly publications for 18 learned society publishers, in fields including physics, chemistry, geology, engineering, acoustics, and other sciences.
