AIP to Provide Composition Services for Geophysics, a Publication of the Society for Exploration Geophysicists

MELVILLE, NEW YORK, 5 April 2006—The American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) have announced an agreement for AIP to provide composition services for the prestigious SEG journal Geophysics. AIP has hosted Geophysics and SEG’s The Leading Edge on its Scitation online platform since January 2002, and in 2005 launched the SEG Digital Library, which also provides access to Technical Program Expanded Abstracts and an electronic version of SEG’s best-selling Encyclopedic Dictionary of Applied Geophysics.

AIP will deliver a range of services that include the conversion of author files to XML, typesetting from XML, delivering PDF proofs to authors, preparing corrected files for online and print publication, plus a host of other functions that contribute to an error-free, streamlined process. AIP will incorporate clearly rendered graphics files, and provide XML data feeds to bibliographic database aggregators.

"We’ve chosen AIP as our vendor for composition services, as it has long proven to be an excellent partner on numerous other projects," said Ted Bakamjian, SEG’s Director of Publications. "AIP tailored its services to our specifications, showing a great awareness for how we need to present our content to subscribers."

"We’re very pleased that SEG thought so highly of the work we’ve done for them to date that they’ve awarded their composition business to us," said Jim Donohue, AIP’s Senior Director of Publishing Services. "We look forward to the challenge of helping SEG meet the ever-changing and increasing demands of today’s rapidly evolving publishing industry."

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the science of geophysics and the education of applied geophysicists. SEG, founded in1930, fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 25,000 members in 130 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.

AIP Publishing Services (www.pub4stm.com) is a division of the American Institute of Physics (www.aip.org), a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. Its Scitation publishing platform currently hosts more than 900,000 articles from more than 150 scholarly publications for 21 learned society publishers, in fields including physics, chemistry, geosciences, engineering, acoustics, and other sciences. AIP’s suite of publishing services also covers every aspect of journal production, with complete management oversight from receipt of authors’ manuscripts through print and online distribution.
