AIP publishes first Open Access article in Review of Scientific Instruments

MELVILLE, NEW YORK, 10 October 2005 AIP is pleased to announce the publication of the first Open Access article in its Author Select program.

"Cryogenic scanning Hall-probe microscope with centimeter scan range and submicron resolution," by Rafael B. Dinner, M. R. Beasley, and Kathryn A. Moler, is now available in the online edition of Review of Scientific Instruments, Vol. 76, No. 10, October 2005.

Scanning Hall-Probe Microscopy is a high-resolution, sensitive method for imaging the magnetic fields near a sample’s surface. Using a combination of motors, sophisticated electronics, and mechanical gears, the researchers demonstrate a technique that significantly increases the traditional scanning area while maintaining high, sub-micron image resolution. This advance increases the practicality of the technique for many applications, while allowing for fast turn-around time in changing samples, another improvement that may help secure an important role for the Hall-Probe microscope in testing and developing new materials.

AIP has introduced the Author Select/Open Access option in three of its journals (Journal of Mathematical Physics and Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science being the other two), and plans to extend the program to all of its journals in 2006.

"Open Access is far from being a ‘trend’ in physics publishing," said AIP Publisher Martin Burke. "But we are more than happy to offer researchers an open access option within our well-known, high-impact, and heavily cited 'traditional' journals."

The AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS publishes 11 journals, two magazines, and a Conference Proceedings series. In addition to publishing, it is a service provider to scientific and engineering society publishers, providing everything from XML composition to online distribution. AIP's Scitation platform currently hosts 150 publications from 21 societies.
