OhioLINK Gains Access to Content from 7 Publishers through Agreement with American Institute of Physics

MELVILLE, NEW YORK, JULY 6, 2000 -- The American Institute of Physics and OhioLINK today announced an agreement under which OhioLINK member libraries will gain online access to 31 scientific journals from 7 publishers. All the publishers are hosted the AIP Online Journal Publishing Service (OJPS) platform.

"We are pleased to provide Ohio universities and colleges with more online access to the publications of important scientific societies," said Tom Sanville, the executive director of OhioLINK. "We are also pleased that we could achieve a single agreement for several publishers, especially some small but key societies that may publish a single title."

AIP signed the agreement on behalf of its own research journals and for the American Vacuum Society, the Acoustical Society of America, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the Society of Rheology, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica Publishing, the commercial publishing arm of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of the OJPS publishers, the American Physical Society, had a preexisting agreement with OhioLINK. Other OJPS customers are considering an OhioLINK deal using the AIP-OhioLINK agreement as a model.

"Smaller society publishers are going to have to 'aggregate' in arrangements like this if they are to compete with the sales clout of the larger publishers," noted Douglas LaFrenier, marketing director for AIP. "We need to vie for consortia attention in the face of deals that could involve hundreds if not thousands of journals at a stroke. Fortunately, scientific societies may have few titles, but they tend to be core journals with high impact. I am glad that the OJPS platform can provide this marketing opportunity in addition to its publishing services."

OhioLINK, the Ohio Library and Information Network, is a consortium of libraries begun in 1992 with catalogs from six public universities-it now serves 78 Ohio colleges and universities and the State Library of Ohio. It provides statewide access to a combined catalog of libraries with patron-initiated borrowing and real-time library shelf status information for books and other items at all libraries, and statewide access to 98 research databases and a growing array of electronic journals and other digital resources. The American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. Its Online Journal Publishing Service currently hosts e-journals of the American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, American Vacuum Society, The Society of Rheology, Biomedical Engineering Society, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, American Association of Physics Teachers, American Society of Civil Engineers, ASME International, and SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, as well as AIP's own publications.
