AIP/APS Virtual Journals Receive Infusion of Research From More Than 20 New Journals

MELVILLE, NEW YORK, 3 February 2006 Three new publishers are now contributing material to the AIP- and APS-sponsored series, Virtual Journals in Science and Technology (VJ) (www.virtualjournals.org). These publishers are The Institute of Pure and Applied Physics (IPAP), with the journals Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (Japan Society of Applied Physics ©) and Journal of the Physical Society of Japan (Physical Society of Japan ©) , The Electrochemical Society (ECS), with its publications Journal of The Electrochemical Society and Electrochemical and Solid-State Letters, and The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), which is now providing papers from its journal Electronics Letters, and from the society’s 15 Proceedings journals.

One longtime participant in the VJ program, the Nature Publishing Group, will soon be providing material from Nature Biotechnology, Nature Materials, and Nature Physics. Their flagship journal Nature has long been a mainstay of the series.

Abstracts from all journals can be found in the Virtual Journals without access restrictions. To view full-text articles, VJ users can follow the links to the articles in the source journals, whether these are hosted on AIP's Scitation platform or another platform. Subscribers to each journal will thus have quick links to the journal's full-text articles, while nonsubscribers can purchase the articles via each publisher's online site.

Speaking for one of the new publishers, Dr. Tohru Suzuki of the National Institute for Materials Science stated that, "IPAP is very happy to be contributing to the Virtual Journals, and we hope that the addition of our journals will make it easier for specialists in the fields covered by the Virtual Journals to stay current with the top-flight research published by IPAP and the other publishers joining the VJs at this time." The IEE’s Jeff Pache said, “The IEE is delighted to be participating in these Virtual Journals. With an increasing amount of scientific and technological development becoming interdisciplinary, it is good to see these journals collecting material from this variety of societies and sources that are likely to reflect different aspects of the subject areas.”

AIP Journal Publisher Martin Burke stated that, "Together, the participation of these prestigious publishers brings a large influx of vital new research to the Virtual Journals series. It will be a great benefit to the scientists and engineers worldwide, who will now find an even broader collection of research in this single resource."

AIP and APS currently publish Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science and Technology, Virtual Journal of Biological Physics Research, Virtual Journal of Quantum Information, Virtual Journal of Ultrafast Science , and Virtual Journal of Applications of Superconductivity . Other Virtual Journals will be launched as warranted, focusing on new and developing fields that cut across a range of traditional publications. Seventeen publishers currently contribute source material to the Virtual Journals. For a complete listing, go to http://www.virtualjournals.org/vjs/partpub.jsp.

American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. AIP is the publisher or co-publisher of 11 journals, two magazines and the AIP Conference Proceedings series, many of which have the highest impact factors in their category. AIP's online publishing platform, Scitation, currently hosts more than 500,000 articles from more than 140 scholarly publications of 20 learned society publishers.

American Physical Society is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. APS represents more than 42,000 physicists worldwide and is a leader in the creation of e-journals. It publishes leading international physics journals, including Physical Review A-E and Physical Review Letters, organizes major scientific meetings, and provides strong outreach programs in education and international and public affairs.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers, founded in 1871, is the largest professional engineering society in Europe and has a worldwide membership of 120,000. The members of IEE, who have joined together to promote the advancement of electrical, electronic and manufacturing science and engineering, range from students to the most distinguished and highly qualified members of the profession. The IEE supports knowledge and education that will underpin engineering in the 21st century.

The Institute of Pure and Applied Physics is a non-profit organization that was established for the purpose of publishing physics-related journals and other relevant scientific and technological information. The Institute was launched on April 1, 2000 , with the aim of delivering the very latest information on advanced research to the world scientific community.

The Electrochemical Society is an 8,000-member organization of scientists and engineers in over 70 countries worldwide. The Society has a long tradition in advancing the theory and practice of electrochemical and solid state science by dissemination of information through its publications and international meetings.

Nature Publishing Group , formed in October 1999 from imprints within the Macmillan Group, brings together the publishing excellence of Macmillan Magazines, Stockton Press and Grove to form a visible, dynamic and service‑ driven force in scientific publishing. It provides primary information, analysis and commentary on what is happening in core scientific disciplines, together with reference information to support education in graduate and postgraduate science.
