Science Joins Participants in AIP/APS Virtual Journals

Melville, NY, September 20, 2000 -- Topically relevant Research Articles and Reports from Science magazine are now available in the Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science & Technology and the Virtual Journal of Biological Physics Research, copublished by the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society, as of their mid-August issues. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is providing AIP and APS with abstracts from Science for posting in the Virtual Journals without access restrictions, so that the communities using the Virtual Journals will have a convenient route to access related articles in Science.

Science Online abstracts are fully incorporated into the VJ database to provide a robust search capability. In order to view the full-text articles, VJ users will need to follow the links provided to the Science Online site. There, Science's user authentication techniques will apply.

"The participation of Science brings extremely vital new research to the AIP/APS Virtual Journals," said AIP Executive Director and CEO Marc H. Brodsky. "It will be a great benefit to the members of the Virtual Journal communities, who will now find an even broader collection of research at one site."

Michael Spinella, Director of the Office of Membership and Meetings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, noted that "AAAS is very happy to be contributing to the Virtual Journals, and we hope that the addition of Science will make it easier for specialists in the fields covered by the AIP/APS Virtual Journals to keep abreast of the latest research."

All Research Articles and Reports in the most recent issues of Science will be reviewed by the Virtual Journal editors, and those articles selected will be placed into appropriate subject headings within each Virtual Journal. Articles from Science will appear in the Virtual Journals roughly one week to one month after publication in Science, depending on frequency. (The Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science & Technology is issued weekly; the Virtual Journal of Biological Physics Research is issued monthly.)

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world's largest general science organization and publisher of the peer-reviewed journal Science. With more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies, AAAS serves as an authoritative source for information on the latest developments in science and bridges gaps among scientists, policy-makers and the public to advance science and science education.

The American Physical Society, established in 1899, is the world's largest association of physicists. It is the publisher of Physical Review, Physical Review Letters and the Reviews of Modern Physics and is dedicated to the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. The Society has been a leader in developing and supporting the most efficient and effective ways for scientists to share their knowledge between themselves and with the public at large.

The American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. Its Online Journal Publishing Service currently hosts e-journals of the American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, American Vacuum Society, Acoustical Society of America, The Society of Rheology, Biomedical Engineering Society, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, American Association of Physics Teachers, MAIK Nauka (the publishing arm of the Russian Academy of Science), American Society of Civil Engineers, ASME International, and SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, as well as AIP's own publications.
