The Society of Exploration Geophysicists Chooses Scitation® to Host its Digital LibraryFor immediate release LONDON , UK , 30 November, 2004 -- Beginning in 2005, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) will consolidate its core publications on Scitation. The online platform has hosted the SEG journals Geophysics and The Leading Edge for three years, and will now add SEG’s annual Technical Program Expanded Abstracts and an electronic version of its best-selling Encyclopedic Dictionary of Applied Geophysics. The entire set of publications, will be known collectively as the SEG Digital Library and all titles will be accessible through a single SEG-branded interface. A key component of the new SEG Digital Library will be the inclusion of the complete archive of Geophysics back to its first issue in 1936, the complete backfile of The Leading Edge since its inception in 1982, and all 23 years of Expanded Abstracts. A single subscription is available for the entire SEG Digital Library, and subscribers will enjoy a discount off the sum of price of the four publications ordered separately. A single search engine will cover the Digital Library, and each publication will also have its own search engine. All the search engines will be available without access restrictions. Access to the entire Digital Library – which will reside at www.segdl.org – will be a benefit of SEG membership in 2005. Institutional and nonmember subscriptions are available for the entire suite of SEG publications or to each one separately. Some of the key features the Scitation platform will bring to SEG publications include: • Table of Contents Alerts – SEG members will receive monthly e-mails containing the tables of contents for both Geophysics and The Leading Edge. Nonmembers may opt in via a link from each journal's home page. • Personalization Toolbox – MyArticles allows users to build collections of articles and share them, along with free abstract views, with colleagues. MyPublications gives users links to the home pages of all journals on Scitation to which they have subscription access. • Download this Citation – Citation information may be downloaded for each article in BibTeX, EndNote, or plain text formats. • Additional reference linking – SEG journal data have been added to the Medline, Chemport, and ISI Web of Science, enabling additional linking both to and from the journals. SEG journals continue to be linked via CrossRef, Inspec, SPIN, and GeoRef. The SEG Digital Library will include: Geophysics Geophysics, published by SEG since 1936, is an archival journal encompassing all aspects of research, exploration, and education in applied geophysics. Starting with the January-February 2005 issue, Geophysics will post each accepted paper online as soon as it is copy edited, composed, and approved for publication. This process, Scitation’s eFirst publishing, will speed online publication of some papers by two to three months. The Leading Edge The Leading Edge is a gateway publication, introducing new geophysical theory, instrumentation, and established practices to scientists in a wide range of geoscience disciplines. Most material is presented in a semitechnical manner that minimizes mathematical theory and emphasizes practical applications. The Leading Edge also serves as SEG's publication venue for official society business. SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts are papers presented at SEG Annual Meetings and International Expositions. These abstracts, on Scitation for the first time in 2005, cover papers presented at each SEG Annual Meeting since 1982. SEG is including all Technical Program Expanded Abstracts published from 1982 through 2004 in its Digital Library. Encyclopedic Dictionary of Applied Geophysics , fourth edition The fourth edition of SEG's best-seller by Robert E. Sheriff is a valuable, comprehensive reference for every geophysicist, geologist, explorationist, engineer, energy adviser, economist, and student involved in the field. Published in print in 2002 and available online for the first time on Scitation in 2005, this reference contains hundreds of terms added since publication of the third edition in 1991, reflecting rapid evolution of the science. The online version will include the ability to browse through the complete set of terms and accompanying figures and the ability to search for a term.
