SPIE Launches Two New e-Journals on Scitation®MELVILLE, NEW YORK, 31 January 2007 — AIP Publishing Services is pleased to announce the release on its Scitation online platform of two new multimedia-enabled e-journals, published by SPIE- The International Society for Optical Engineering. The publications, Journal of Nanophotonics (JNP) and Journal of Applied Remote Sensing (JRS), are available online only and have been integrated into the SPIE Digital Library (www.spiedl.org), also hosted on Scitation. "What AIP basically did for us was custom configure an efficient submission workflow process to accommodate our new e-journals," said Eric Pepper, SPIE Director of Publications. "Now author-prepared files can migrate directly from AIP's Peer X-Press manuscript submission and peer review service to the Scitation platform, greatly reducing time to publication. We are especially excited to be able to publish papers with multimedia and plan to extend that to all our journals." AIP Publishing Services further adapted Peer X-Press (PXP) to accept multimedia objects (audio and video) and extend the review functions to include these items. In addition, AIP expanded PXP's export capability to include Scitation-ready SGML "heads and tails," plus a number of other modifications, all in service of JNP and JRS. "An interesting challenge for us was to incorporate reference links, which SPIE required, while still skipping the production process during which tagging for these links typically occurs," said Paul DeCillis, Manager, Scitation Operations. "We accomplished this by leveraging a brand new capability enabled by the CrossRef Simple Text Query service, which allows authors to retrieve Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) by simply cutting and pasting their references into a form on the Crossref site. We were thus able to save SPIE the cost of granular XML tagging, and save time, which is so important to a rapid-publication, e-first journal."
