AIP's Online Journal Publishing Service Hosts the New SPIE Digital LibraryFor immediate release Melville, NY, July 31, 2003 - The American Institute of Physics (www.aip.org) announced that it is providing online hosting services for the new digital library of SPIE-The International Society for Optical Engineering. The SPIE Digital Library (www.spiedl.org) was officially launched online today and offers SPIE proceedings and journal papers from 1998 to the present in PDF format. The service is accessible through AIP's Online Journal Publishing Service (OJPS), www.ojps.org, which hosts more than 100 publications from some of the world's most prestigious scientific and engineering publishers. Personal subscriptions to the SPIE Digital Library include the right to download 50 full-text papers over a 12-month period. Subscribers can search and browse SPIE papers, and each download will be debited from their account. In addition, single papers can be purchased at a per-paper rate. Searching and browsing SPIE citations and abstracts continue to be free of charge, both on SPIEWeb (www.spie.org) and in the SPIE Digital Library. Institutional site licenses are also available. "As more and more researchers turn to the Web, it's imperative that we provide them with a quick and easy method for accessing our online content," said Eric Pepper, SPIE's Director of Publications. "By mounting the SPIE Digital Library on OJPS, we accomplish this goal, while also reaching a broader audience of engineers and scientists." Mr. Pepper went on to say, "We've chosen AIP as the home for our digital library, as they've long proven to be excellent partners on numerous other projects." A number of important features make the SPIE Digital Library a vital research tool for those in the fields of optics and photonics. The easy-to-navigate interface and powerful search engine of AIP's OJPS platform provide the library's subscribers with reference linking to SPIE journals, customized article collection, e-mail alerts, and browsing and searching by year, volume number, subject, symposium, and title. Individual subscribers can track and manage their download activity and subscription status via a personal account page. "We're very pleased to have undertaken this initiative on behalf of SPIE," said Frank Perugini, AIP's Director of Online Services." Over the years, AIP has been able to serve the society in a number of capacities ranging from journal composition to online journal hosting. The digital library is an attractive service in which all of SPIE's major content offerings are available through a unified set of interfaces, databases, and research tools. It represents the next generation of online publishing services that AIP can provide to society publishers." The SPIE Digital Library includes papers published from 1998 to the present for the following SPIE publications: Proceedings of SPIE, Optical Engineering, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Journal of Electronic Imaging, and Journal of Microlithography, Microfabrication, and Microsystems. SPIE plans to increase the library's archive to include content going back to 1990 by the end of 2004 - an archive of more than 200,000 papers. SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering was founded in 1955 to bring together engineers from several technical disciplines involved in high-speed, optically based test and measurement. SPIE has since grown into a vital organization that serves the international technical community as the premier provider of education, information, and resources covering optics and photonics technologies and their many engineering, scientific, and commercial applications. The American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation chartered in 1931 to provide publishing and distribution services for scientific and technical societies. Its Online Journal Publishing Service currently hosts e-journals of the American Physical Society, AVS - The Science & Technology Society, Acoustical Society of America, the Society of Rheology, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, American Association of Physics Teachers, American Society of Civil Engineers, ASME International, the Electrochemical Society, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, IS&T - The Society for Imaging Science & Technology, and SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, as well as AIP's own journals and conference proceedings.
