JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Publisher, Journals and Technical Publications
Branch/Division: Publisher/Editorial Operations
Reports to: Sr. Vice President, Publishing

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES

Overall responsibility for AIPs science journals and technical publications and for the quality and features of the publications, in all media.
Responsibility includes general oversight of all aspects of journal publishing including marketing, editorial operations, financial management, online presentation, etc.
Oversee the activities of the Editorial Operations Division, including local and remote journal office operations.
Provide support for AIP Conference Proceedings from a scientist’s perspective.
Oversee the development and refinement of AIP online product features.
Oversee journal and Conference Proceedings intellectual property activities.
Acquire or develop new journal products; work with editors to improve journal products; work with Marketing to develop promotional plans; work with Sr. Vice President and staff on product pricing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Oversee the development and refinement of AIP online product features, and work with AIP staff and Scitation partners on defining and prioritizing Scitation enhancements.
Overall responsibility for editorial administration and health of AIP journals
Establishing, in cooperation with scholarly editors and Members Societies, editorial policies, goals, strategies, schedules, and other appropriate editorial elements.
Coordinate journal reviews and searches for new editors.
Oversee the various activities of the Editorial Operations Division, including operations of local and remote journal offices and their interface with AIP Production Services, the Chaos editorial office, the EPAPS program, AIPs involvement with the MMM Conference, etc.
Director, Editorial Operations reports to this position.
Oversee the acquisition and development of new journals, with a focus on experimenting with new models and methods of publishing.
Work with other publishing staff, editors, and members of the physics community to identify prospects for new journal products
Facilitate development or acquisition of journals, e.g., review, planning, budgeting, implementation, etc.
The Manager of Journal Development reports to this position.
Work with Sr.VP Publishing and her staff in order to maintain the financial health of AIPs journal publishing program, online and print.
Work with Marketing and Director of Business Development to develop pricing models and recommendations for AIPs journals and other publishing products.
Assume product-line responsibility for all AIP journals, interacting with the Marketing Division to market AIP journals worldwide.
Provide a scientists perspective for the content of promotional pieces as well as for the selection of target audiences.
Work with the Director, Special Publications and Proceedings in maintaining the editorial quality and meeting the financial goals of the AIP Conference Proceedings program.
Provide guidance in the establishment of alternative publication products and services (e.g., subseries and online products).
Promote interactions with journal editors to assist in the identification of proceedings appropriate for publication by AIP.
Oversee operations of the AIP/APS Virtual Journals (VJs), working with VJ Editors, AIP and APS staff, and other participating publishers as needed.
Manage the ongoing publishing process; work to improve VJ online products and editorial tools; help to identify and launch a new VJs; assist with development of sources of revenue for the VJs and methods for containing costs.
Provide initiatives and seek input from editors and the online journals user communities.
Work with AIP Publishing directors and managers in establishing both long term goals and short term initiatives that contribute to AIPs electronic publishing future.
Oversee single-site licensing of AIPs online products and revisions to the AIP single-site license.
Work with Marketing to help attain AIPs goals in multi-site and consortium licensing and review licenses developed for these purposes.
Assume responsibility for the continuous review and implementation of AIP copyright, usage, and archiving policies and forms, including timely response to all rights and permissions requests.
The administrator of AIPs Rights and Permissions office reports to this position.
Provide general oversight of indexing activities, ensuring high-quality indexing is performed in a timely fashion.
Oversee revisions to PACS, working with the classification committee and the editors of AIP and Member Society journals.
Interact with and advise AIP Publishing customers and partners as needed including NIST and MMM.
Interact with AIP advisory committees and Member Society staff and membership; incorporate their advice into AIP Publishing plans.
Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced physics-related degree; published articles in established physics-related journals
Management experience in scientific and technical journal publishing, with knowledge of production, electronic publishing, marketing, advertising, budgeting, and management.
Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
In lieu of physics-related degree, advanced business degree with extensive experience in scientific publishing considered.
