Dinosaur Deaths: (SFX: under here. . . falling large thumping object) SIXTY-FIVE MILLION YEARS AGO A GIANT METEOR CRASH LANDED IN MEXICO. THE DINOSAURS ALL DIED (SFX: many thumping objects) SHORTLY THEREAFTER, SO MANY SCIENTISTS THINK THE TWO EVENTS WERE CONNECTED. BUT HOW? A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS RECENTLY SET SAIL ONBOARD THE "RESOLUTION" TO SEARCH FOR CLUES. THE RESOLUTION IS AN OCEAN DRILLING BOAT THAT LITERALLY DRILLS INTO THE SEA FLOOR. OCEANOGRAPHER HAROLDUR SIGGURDSON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND SPOKE FROM THE BOAT ABOUT THEIR RESEARCH, "We're drilling in the carribean. . . to study the sedimentary records. . . we dril linto the sea floor. . . over a mile in some cases, in order to extract . . . solid pieces of rock from the ocean floor." SIGGURDSON EXPLAINS THAT THE METEOR SENT UP A HUGE DUST CLOUD THAT SETTLED OVER THE EARTH. THIS DUST HAS LONG BEEN BURIED UNDER THE OCEAN FLOOR, BUT THE SHIPS DRILL CAN BRING SOME OF IT BACK UP TO THE SURFACE. BY STUDYING 65 MILLION YEAR OLD SEDIMENTS, HE HOPES HE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT EFFECTS THE METEOR HAD ON THE ENVIRONMENT. "We believe that the very large cloud of sulfur rich gases enveloped the earth and. . . formed a thin veil in the atmosphere. . . in turn causinga cooling of the earth's surface, and this cooling was sufficiently severe. . .to cause a very sudden. . . climate change and also total darkness for extended periods. . . and in turn leading to a collapse of the biological system including the extinction of the dinosaurs." SIGGURDSON WOULD ALSO LIKE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF ANOTHER METEOR HIT THE EARTH. "Fortunately they only happen at the rate of about once every 100million years."
