Sticky Physics EVEN NURSERY SCHOOL CHILDREN KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF GLUE--NOTHING STICKS TOGETHER WITHOUT IT. PHYSICISTS THINK THIS IS TRUE ABOUT MATTER AS WELL--EVERYTHING IN OUR WORLD IS MADE UP OF QUARKS, BUT THE QUARKS WOULDN'T STICK TOGETHER WITHOUT THE HELP OF SOMETHING CALLED--NOT SURPRISINGLY--GLUEBALLS. BUT SEEING ONE ISN'T SO EASY. Weingarten: "A glueball doesn't have any properties which are tremendously unusual when seen in an experiment so the only way you can figure out when you actually seen a glueball in an experiment is to really calculate the properties of a glueball very accurately and those calculations turn out to be very hard." PHYSICIST DON WEINGARTEN AT IBM SAYS THE MATH JUST CAN'T BE DONE BY HAND AND ITS TAKEN 2 DECADES FOR EVEN A COMPUTER TO BE POWERFUL ENOUGH. IN FACT WEINGARTEN AND HIS COLLEAGUES USED A COMPUTER AS POWERFUL AS 250 DESKTOP PCS TO DO THE CALCULATION--AND IT STILL TOOK THREE YEARS . BUT THE 3 YEARS OF WORK PAID OFF--NOT ONLY DID THEY PREDICT THE MASS AND DECAY TIME OF the GLUEBALL EXTREMELY ACCURATELY, THEY FOUND THAT THEIR PREDICTIONS MATCHEDA PREVIOUSLY UNSTUDIED PARTICLE THAT PHYSICISTS HAVE NOTICED COMING OUT OF THEIR ACCELERATORS. Weingarten: "we got out a table which lists all the various particles people ahve foudn and. . . our numbers were in very good agreement with the observed numbers for this particle in the tables, so that was the point at which we really had a pretty high degree of confidence that theis was indeed a glueball. " WEINGARTEN SAYS HE'S 99% SURE THAT HE'S FOUND THE ELUSIVE GLUEBALL, BUT HE WANTS TO SEE MORE EXPERIMENTS DONE BEFORE HE'LL CONSIDER THE MYSTERY OF THE GLUEBALL OFFICIALLY UNSTUCK.
