Salaries 2000: Summary Report

by Megan Henly and Raymond Y. Chu

This report provides a summary of the lastest salary data for physicists and related scientists.  It is based on a biennial survey of a sample of U.S.-resident members of the AIP Member Societies conducted by the Statistical Research Center of the American Institute of Physics (AIP).  For the past 20 years, this report series has documented the salary, employment and demographic characteristics of the U.S. members of AIP’s ten Member Societies.  This year, the trends include:

Methodology

The sample for this survey included a random selection of over a sixth of all U.S.-resident members of the AIP Member Societies as of December 1999.  Nearly 15,200 members received questionnaires that were mailed out in May 2000.
The questionnaires asked for information on demographics, educational attainment and employment.  Members who did not respond to the initial mailing were sent a second questionnaire in June 2000.  Those still not responding received a third questionnaire in July 2000.  Over 9,350 respondents completed and returned their questionnaires for a response rate of 62%.

Content of the Full Report

The Membership Sample Survey series monitors the conditions affecting the salaries of the members of the AIP Member Societies.  The degree level and years of experience of individuals, and the sector of the economy in which they are employed, have a great impact on these salaries.  Geographic region and work activity also influence salaries to a lesser degree.

The majority of AIP Member Society members hold PhDs.  Therefore, this report contains more detail on doctorates than other degree levels.  Analyses in this report show the salary structures across the employment sectors of universities, industry, and government.  This report devotes a section to the effects of academic rank and salary base among those in academe, the predominant employment sector among respondents.  The high representation of the industrial sector among all degree levels prompts a section about lower level degrees in industry.  Completing the report is a section that compares the salaries, unemployment rates and part-time employment rates of female and male society members.  All salary analyses are based upon full-time employed society members unless otherwise specified.  Comparisons with data from previous years do not show actual change of individuals, but merely suggest it.
