Custom Optics
Newport’s new rapid-prototyping system enables it to ship
custom optics in as little as a week. Its fast-track operation significantly
reduces the typical delivery time for custom optics of 6 to 16 weeks,
which often bottlenecks product development. Newport’s customers
can quickly obtain customized spherical lenses, aspheric lenses,
windows, and mirrors for needed changes in optical-system design
for a nextgeneration prototype, and to meet the target date for
launching a new product. Its services include computerized shaping,
aspheric polishing, diamond turning, and ion-assisted coating for
optics used in applications such as semiconductor equipment, medical
instruments, aerospace and defense systems, and laser research.

Capillary Rheometers
Bohlin has introduced two new models of capillary rheometers, the
RH7-D and the RH10-D. The RH7-D is the company’s latest version
of the original Rosand RH7, which Bohlin has continued to develop
since acquiring the Rosand capillary product line. Both new models
operate under high loading conditions. The RH10-D operates at up
to 100 kN of load and 1,200 mm/min of speed. A new digital-drive
system enables both models to have unsurpassed speed control, accuracy,
and dynamic operating range. Their hardware is supported by Flowmaster,
the newest generation of 32-bit Windows-based software.

Air Bearings
New Way’s flat-pad air bearings use newly designed gimbaled
stud mounts, which allow greater flexibility in alignment and preload
and, thus, easier use in precision-motion applications. The air
bearings can be run against any flat surface, including granite,
ceramic, glass, plastic, and noncorrosive metals. Air bearings have
no friction or wear problems and do not require lubrication, making
them ideal for demanding applications, and the constant airflow
reduces dust and particles on the bearing surface. Because they
are made of a porous material, the bearings will not damage surfaces
should there be an inadvertent loss of air supply. New Way’s
standard air bearings can handle high-load applications up to 1,750
lb.

Spectrometer
PANalytical’s new energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
detects low levels of heavy elements, from sodium to uranium. The
Epsilon 5 can make measurements in solid, pressed-powder, granule,
liquid, thin-film, and loose-material samples in a vacuum or a helium
atmosphere. The instrument meets the increasing demand for the environmental
analysis of diverse materials in varying concentrations, and it
excels at trace analysis of heavy elements. The Epsilon 5 operates
at a maximum power of 600 W with excitation voltages from 24 to
100 kV, and its gadolinium anode enhances the fluorescence of elements
from rhodium to barium. It has applications in geology, land reclamation,
fossil-fuel use, emissions monitoring, recycling, catalyst production,
and electronics and electrical-appliance manufacturing.

Metrology Camera
Radiant has introduced its novel PM-1000 metrology camera
for the on-line testing of display output in high-throughput production
facilities. The PM-1000 uses a 10-bit complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor
imaging array to deliver inherently fast integration and readout
times and to enable rapid data transfer. The PM-1000 provides
a
high-speed method of acquiring colorimetric and photometric test
images, and integrated, on-chip filters enable simultaneous measurements
of different colors. It delivers frame-acquisition rates up to
100
times as fast as those of cameras based on charge-coupled device
arrays. The PM- 1000’s applications include luminance, illuminance,
and chromaticity measurements of liquid-crystal diodes (LCDs), LCD
components, display backlights, organic LCDs, and cathode ray tubes.

Injection Mixer
Westfall’s new, compact Model 2800 static injection mixer
eliminates the need to inject upstream and easily installs in-line
for a wide variety of chemical, industrial, and water-treatment
applications. The mixer consists of a fixed plate into which one
or more fluids are injected and rapidly mixed by a combination of
alternate vortex shedding and intense shear zone turbulence to achieve
a 98% injected fluid dispersion only 10 diameters downstream from
the mixer. A short laying length enables the Model 2800’s
use in pipes where conventional mixers will not fit. It is designed
to fit inside the mating-flange bolt circle of any piping system
and is available in diameters of 2 to 72 in. in polyvinyl chloride,
fiberglass- reinforced plastic, 316 stainless steel tubing, titanium,
and Hastelloy.

Residual-Gas Analyzers
Thermo Vacuum’s new high-sensitivity, low-noise residual gas
analyzers (RGAs) cover mass ranges of 1–100, 1–200,
or 1–300 amu and can detect partial pressures as low as 5
× 10–14 mbar (3 × 10–14 Torr). All models
provide a sensitivity of 5 × 10–4 A/mbar and high-speed,
stable electronics. Thermo Vacuum’s SMART IQ+ models come
with a triple filter and allow the timestamping of data with 0.01-s
resolution. The new RGAs include GasWorks software, a graphic user
interface that allows click-andgo measurements or access to advanced
features, including derived values, scheduled scans, data logging,
alarms, background filtering, and comparing obtained spectra with
those of more than 200 compounds stored in its data library.

Light Source
TuiLaser has announced a new continuous- wave (CW) vacuum-ultraviolet
light source, available at wavelengths from 121 to 358 nm, and from
60 to 80 nm for special applications. The lamp provides true CW,
high spectral brilliance, a small emission area (0.1–1 mm2),
and a narrow emission band (1 pm to 1 nm, depending on wavelength).
Output power ranges from 10 to 30 mW, also depending on wavelength.
The lamp enables a variable pulse structure (100 ns to CW) and a
repetition rate up to megahertz, and its peak power at 1/µs
pulse duration can be 1,000 times continuous power. The compact
unit is designed for applications such as semiconductor inspection
and metrology, various kinds of spectroscopy, and analytical instruments.

Snap-Disk Thermostats
Fenwal has expanded its line of surface-mount, snap-disk thermostats
to include custom temperature settings of up to 525 °F and
most types of termination. Fenwal calibrates and tests its
thermostats
individually to meet both thermal and electrical characteristics
and can preset them for customers. The rugged devices have
a snap-acting
bimetallic disk as the actuating element and silver contacts to
ensure long life, and can be equipped with soldering lugs,
wiring
eyelets, and quick-connect terminations in various mounting configurations.
The thermostats come with normally close or normally open switching,
are suitable for multiple uses up to 100,000 cycles, and meet MIL-STD-202
criteria for vibration and shock resistance.

New Software
Analysis Software
Software Ansoft Corp. has released SIwave v1.1, its new simulation
software for the advanced modeling of integrated circuits and
printed
circuit boards. The software meets the growing demand for fast
and accurate signal- and power-integrity analysis aimed at
solving the
challenge confronting the designers of high-speed computer boards
and packages. SIwave’s hybrid, finite-element technique
enables the characterization of simultaneous-switching noise,
power and
ground bounce, resonances, and reflections and coupling between
traces and between power and ground planes. The software also
allows
engineers to accurately simulate high-speed devices using their
own driver and receiver models.
