Jen Ives is Director of Meetings at the American Meteorological Society (AMS), where she has worked for over fifteen years to bring together members of the water, weather, and climate community to share their science and connect with one another. Among other initiatives, she is currently working to leverage opportunities to change the way AMS plans and executes its meetings post-pandemic, including a project funded by the AIP Venture Grant entitled “Green Meetings in a Post-Covid World.” Jen consulted on the AIP’s Future of Association Convening: Envisioning for The Sciences (FACETS) report, published in 2021 and also serves as staff liaison to the AMS Future of Meetings Task Force (FOMTF) as well as its Committee on Environmental Stewardship (ACES). She earned her BA in Political Science and Honors from Villanova University and her Certificate in Meeting Planning from Northeastern University. Jen is an active member of Meeting Professionals International (MPI), the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE), and the Science CEO (SCEO) Meetings Group.
Talk Title: Forecasting Next Steps: The AMS Future of Meeting Task Force
Abstract: As the American Meteorological Society returns to in-person and hybrid meetings after years of virtual events, they have convened the Future of Meeting Task Force to help them reimagine scientific conferences going forward, ensuring they align with their strategic goals. This presentation will identify key areas for consideration, discuss practical next steps that AMS is taking as it plans its future, and highlight the importance of bringing the right stakeholders in to address big existential questions, with an eye on how other societies can learn from their conversations as well as their conclusions.
