The Federal Science Leadership Tracker is an index of high-level federal officials that have responsibility for appropriating funds, setting policy, or managing programs relevant to the physical sciences. The tracker currently contains information about the chairmen and ranking members of selected congressional committees as well as selected Senate-confirmed positions and other leadership positions at key agencies.

This resource is updated on an ongoing basis as new leaders emerge, current appointees depart, and nominees make their way through the Senate confirmation process. Additional committees, agencies, and leadership positions may be added in the future.

This subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. With a new Democratic majority in the House, former ranking member Rep. José Serrano (D-NY) is now the subcommittee chair. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) is now the ranking member, filling the seat formerly held by Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), who lost his reelection bid. Leadership in the Senate is unchanged from the previous Congress, with Sens. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) returning as chair and ranking member, respectively.

This subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes the entire Department of Energy, which is the largest funder of fundamental physical sciences in the U.S. With a new Democratic majority in the House, Reps. Mike Simpson (R-ID) and Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) have swapped places as chair and ranking member. Leadership in the Senate is unchanged from the previous Congress, with Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) returning as chair and ranking member, respectively.

The committee does not have any jurisdiction over federal agencies or the ability to consider legislation. Reps. Kathy Castor (D-FL) and Garret Graves (R-LA) are the chair and ranking member, respectively.
